An Oreum soars in the middle of the Moseulpo Plain in Daejeong-eup. Its name is Moseul-bong (peak), because it is in Moseul-gae(Moseul-po). There is a smoke signal tower at the top of the Oreum. Moseul derives a Jeju dialect 'Mosal,' meaning sands.
Gotjawal in Jeju dialect refers to a messy place with trees and shrubs all just tangled up. It keeps warmth and moisture and is the world's only forest where tropical and polar vegetation coexist. Gotjawal is green even in winter, absorbing carbon dioxide that drives global warming and acts as the natural lungs. Jeju Olle unveiled the Shinpyeong-Mureung Gotjawal Trail for the first time.
It is where the niece of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong and the wife of the martyr Hwang Sa-young in the 'White Paper Incident,' Jeong Nanjoo Maria, is buried. She died after living as the maidservant upon exile to Daejeong-eup. Jeong Nanjoo Maria is recorded to be the first Catholic in Jeju. Her grave was ornated as the one of a martyr, after 130 years of burial. In 1994, the Catholics in Jeju d the Daejeong Sacred Place.
It is a vast plateau in Mureung Gotjawal. ‘Jeonggae-wat’ means Jeong's field, and it grew the straps used to build a roof. There are towers of small stones used for cultivation.
